Go West: Norwegian Jazz to the Far Reaches of the Middle Kingdom
Go West: Norwegian Jazz to the Far Reaches of the Middle Kingdom
China has seen an increasing number of visiting artists from a range of different musical backgrounds, but the large majority of these performances have occurred in the clubs and theatres of a small number of cities. Meanwhile, the bulk of the country remains unaware of the regularity with which artists visit China and has little opportunity to experience live music of an international calibre.
Norway may be a small nation, but its size belies its significance and contributions around the world in many fields. In China, Norway enjoys a reputation envied the world over, as a result of the long-term presence of Norwegian cultural, business and educational initiatives. In much the same way, Norway’s reputation in the jazz world has seen home-grown musicians make waves around the globe, being counted among the world’s best, despite starting at a numerical and geographical disadvantage.
Combining Norway’s national reputation with that of its musicians and history of unique cultural projects is the Go West project, so named for the region that China has devoted new energies to developing.
This exciting project is produced by YGTwo Productions and was initiated and supported by the Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, along with the consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Go West allows an extremely significant portion of the population – the students at institutes of higher learning – to experience first-hand not only world-class live music, but also adds an educational element in the master’s classes and impromptu interactions with the visiting musicians.
Go West has proves that jazz music has a strong following across the country, and has the ability to inspire audiences of all kinds. Each performance – from the largest theatre, to the smallest classroom – shares one essential element: Cultural interaction. Whether in the performers’ detailed explanation of the pieces that they perform, or in the master’s classes that involve audience participation, the interaction has the effect of transforming audiences from observer to participant.
